Just a little bit about OwlChelsea…

Hey Everyone!!
I’m Chelsea and I am a Junior at Temple University. I’m an Adult and Organizational Development major with a Spanish minor and I have no idea what I would like to do for the rest of my life (anyone who tells you they do is outright lying). I’m from Central Massachusetts…which yes automatically makes me a diehard Red Sox and Patriots fan. : ) Although I am a busy student with classes and a job I do get lots free time for myself. I enjoy spending free time with friends and exploring Philadelphia. I love running, icecream, and being busy!
Questions about Temple? Send ‘em my way : )
P.S. The photo was taken at the summit of Mt. Piermont. It’s in New Hampshire. I LOVE to hike : )

I’m not exactly sure if you’re the person i should be talking to, but the temple website told me to check out these blogs, so i did and your information page says to ask you questions, so here goes…
i really want to go to temple. it has exactly the type of major that i want and i feel like i would be really happy there, but my parents think that because temple is in the middle of the city, it’s too dangerous and i wouldn’t be safe there at all. I’d just really like to know if you ever feel unsafe in Philadelphia, or at Temple, or if my parents have any reason to worry.
Also, I heard that temple is a commuter school and that not a lot of people stay on campus on the weekends. is that true?

Hi Deanna,
I think you would be really happy here too!! I don’t know many people who aren’t! Temple is a city school BUT it is extremely safe. We have over 120 full time, fully trained (by the Philadelphia police force) Temple police officers who patrol campus and the areas surrounding campus 24/7. We have stadium lighting at night to keep things well lit (very well lit!) and we also have a shuttle that runs from dusk to dawn that will take you anywhere on campus and to a huge amount of places off campus. I have never had a problem as far as saftey or security goes, I feel safe on this campus 100 percent of the time.
As far as commuting goes. Temple was traditionally a commuter school, however that is no longer true. There are 23,000 full-time undergraduate students and 11,000 of those students live on or around campus. Also, we are by NO means a “ghost campus” on the weekends. Temple students are involved in many clubs, organizations, sports teams, etc. and there are always alot of people here on the weekends.
My best advice to you is to come with your parents to get a tour of the University (preferrably with me! haha). I think they would be pleasantly surprised, and would feel much better about Temple University as their daughters school of choice! Please feel free to have them e-mail me at visits@temple.edu if they have any questions, comment, or concerns. Hope to see you soon!
Best of luck!!
Chelsea

Hi, I also have sort of a random question, but I think you would be able to answer it. I know a lot of schools offer some type of free transportation, usually a bus, does Temple do this too? I know I went to a tour a couple of months ago and it sounded like you had to pay for any transportation like off of the campus and into the other parts of the city. So if this is true, doesn’t it get sort of expensive paying for a bus all the time to get around to and from the city?

Hi Meghan,
We do talk about various forms of public transportation on tour, and yes Temple does have a shuttle service to our other campuses. We provide shuttle service to our Health Science Campus (about 3 miles north of Main Campus) and also to our Ambler campus (about 40 minutes from Main Campus). These shuttles run daily and are free for Temple students. To find the specific schedules please visit http://www.temple.edu/facilities. Using public transportation to get around the city is pretty cheap too! It is $2.90 round trip to ride the SEPTA subway and about $6 to use the SEPTA Regional Rail trains. For more information regarding public transportation visit http://www.septa.org. Hope this helps!! Thanks for asking!
