Temple Students Rally against Budget Cuts

Yesterday while I was sitting in the Anderson computer lab there was a sudden interruption. Fellow students were shouting and chanting about possible budget cuts to the Commonwealth appropriation for Temple, demanding that tuition rates stay low. It is scary to think that the budget could be cut by nearly 50 percent.

To help Temple keep tuition rates low join TALON, a Temple community organization that supports the university through advocacy and action.

Take Back the Night!

Take Back the Night is a nationally recognized event that promotes awareness about sexual violence toward women and is held in hundreds of different locations each year. I have planned a Take Back the Night at Temple to break the silence about sexual violence against women.

Babies!

When I am not in class or doing homework or giving tours I am a nanny. Being a nanny can be exhausting and messy, but it definitely has it’s advantages.

1) Babies are cute.

2) Babies take naps!

3) Babies are FUNNY. Really really funny.

CERT Celebrates Peace

Temple’s CERT program, Conflict Education Resource Team, is hosting a coffee house night featuring Expressions of Peace on Wednesday, March 23rd at 8:30pm in the Student Activity Center. The event will include performances by Temple students & friends that express what peace means to them and the importance it has in all of our lives.

We could all use a little peace in our lives!

Vagina Monologues at Temple!

This Friday the HEART (Health Empowerment Awareness Resource Team) at Temple will be putting on their annual production of the HILARIOUS Vagina Monologues! The Vagina Monologues is an eposidic play written by Eve Ensler and was originally performed in an Off Broadway theater in 1996. Since then there have been several adaptations of the play given across the country each performed by a different cast. Temple’s performance will consist of Temple students who auditioned for different roles within the show. Although the show is absolutely hilarious when dealing with topics such as sex, love, and orgasm it also provides a wonderful forum to discuss much more serious topics such as rape, violence against women, and AIDS. The show is a great combination of laughs and tears (mostly laughs!) that I think ANY woman could enjoy. I saw the Temple performance of the Vagina Monologues at Temple in 2008 and cannot wait to see what the ladies of the cast will bring to the stage this year! Look back in a few days for photos!

Study Abroad

Last year at this time I was not on American soil, I was living in Oviedo, Spain with a new family and new surroundings. Looking back on it now, I cannot believe it has been a year since I moved in with my host mom, Esther, into her small apartment in the lower section of the city. After class I would spend my days exploring the beautiful mountainsides around Oviedo and enjoying pastries at the BEST pastry shops in the entire world. This year things are a little different. I am a senior, living in an American city, no Spanish pastries, and certainly no mountainside hiking. Although I am still taking one last Spanish course before I graduate in May I definitely miss speaking Spanish all day in Oviedo. I miss seeing all the little kids run around in their totally un-American clothing and spending afternoons in the SUNNY park. Not at all like the parks here in Philly lately…full of snow!

Sick of MTV reruns already??

I am so sick and tired of watching “16 and Pregnant” reruns on MTV that I have hit my bookcase (even though I SWORE I would never read again after finals!). These are a few of my favorite books that I could read over and over and a few that I just finished recently that I absolutely LOVED. If winter break has you bored out of your mind, go to the library and get a few of these!

Winter Break in NE

Being from NE in the winter definitely has its advantages and disadvantages. This winter season we have had very little snow so I am happy as can be, but of course yesterday in Maine it was snowing! It was nice to x-mas shop in the flurries and it was great to see the Nubble Lighthouse with Christmas lights on it! The harbor is lame in winter because all of the boats are gone, but the scenery is still nice. Although this was my millionth time in Maine it was my friend Angelo’s first which made for a special trip.

10 Days until Christmas!

So in the hectic mess that is finals I am also gearing up for the holidays by doing all my last-minute baking, shopping, and movie watching. I have only crossed one of my Christmas “must see” films of the season off my list which means I have a whole lot of movie watching ahead.

So far I have seen Home Alone 2 Lost in New York but have yet to watch Elf, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman, The Santa Clause, or The Christmas Story!

I guess you could call me a slacker this holiday season when it comes to the spirit department, but I will be making up for lost time as soon as I am done with finals TODAY AT 5!!!

Barbara Walters “10 Most Fascinating” of 2010

So, as a loyal “10 Most Fascinating” of the year watcher I was not thrilled with Barbara’s list. I love Barbara, always will, but really Barbara, Snooki?? Like what is this world coming to?!?!

The list is as follows

10) Betty White

9) Mark Zuckerberg

8 ) Justin Beiber

7) The Cast of the Jersey Shore

6) Sandra Bullock

5) Jennifer Lopez (seriously Barbara? seriously?)

4) LeBron James

3) Kate Middleton

2) Sarah Palin

1) General David Petraeus

As I was watching the special that aired on ABC last night I became increasingly disappointed as Barbara revealed her top 10. Betty White, OK fair enough. She’s old, she works, she’s lovable, hysterical, and has had a HUGE comeback year, I say she is worthy of the #10 spot.

Mark Zuckerberg fascinating? YES ABSOLUTELY. This man has started a phenomenon that is world-wide and has, and will forever change the face of social networking. With the film “The Social Network” bringing in $89,244,464 in the U.S. alone, Mark falls in at #9 but I think he is WAY more fascinating than some of the others on the list.

Then there is “The Beib.” As a Justin fan myself I certainly think he is worthy of the “most fascinating” list. Footage shown on the special revealed Justin’s baby years as a talented musician and convinced me that this kid is the real deal. Keep doing what you do Justin, we love you!!

That brings it to number 7, my second to least favorite on the list, The Cast of the Jersey shore. I have no interest in this show, nor do I care about their tanning eating or drinking habits. If I wanted to watch people get drunk and fight I would just make sure to plan a Spring Break trip this year.

Sandra, Sandra, Sandra. She has had a ROUGH year and yes she is still amazing, but would she really have been chosen if it weren’t for her scumbag husband cheating on her? Who knows.

Jlo. Oh My God, Jlo….seriously? I cannot even believe Jennifer Lopez made the list, never mind number 5!! What has Jlo done this year, when have you heard of her this year? The excuse is even worse, she made the list because she is the new judge of American Idol. BIG DEAL, nobody even watches that show anymore and even less will be tuning in without Simon there. I watched this when I was in high school for like three seasons, since then it has just been old news.

LeBron James is definitely a huge success, but I don’t really have any opinions about this one.

Kate Middleton!! Future Princess. Best choice EVER Barbara! So you are a regular college student going to school and a prince takes an interest in you. Not only is he a prince but he is shockingly handsome and son to beloved Princess Diana. Eventually he decides you are the one, proposes, gives you mommy’s ring and next thing you know you are marrying into the royal family. Is this not every girls dream? Kate, please don’t screw this up, and also your hair is fabulous.

Sarah Palin. For lack of a filter I will not comment too much on this pick. Let’s just say that if Sarah Palin were ever the president of the United States I would leave the country until the horror was over.

And last but certainly not least, General David Petraeus. This man is certainly fascinating and worthy of the number one spot on the list. A beautiful combination of humanity and strength General Petraeus is not only fascinating, but inspiring.

Well, that’s about it. It is what it is but I really hope Barbara comes up with better people next year. If I even see one trashy celeb on the list I will not be tuning in.
